Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007 – OOIDA members continue to display their generosity and big hearts as the Association enters the fourth day of its “Telethon for Troops” campaign in support of U.S. troops overseas
The campaign is designed to collect funds for preparing and sending care parcels to U.S. military personnel stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. A portion of each membership fee for all new and renewing OOIDA members during this week is being donated to the fund. OOIDA, in turn, will match the total amount of those funds. During the campaign, OOIDA is offering the special membership price of $25 as an incentive.
OOIDA had hoped to raise at least $5,000 through this effort, but OOIDA Membership Department supervisor, Sylvia Dodson, said Wednesday morning that it’s clear the telethon will far exceed that by the time it’s all over on Friday.
“It’s really surpassed our expectations,” said Dodson. “Not only are members joining and renewing in large numbers to help boost the total, but we are overwhelmed by the number of members, many of them our lifetime members, who are phoning in with straight donations.”
Dodson said those individual donations ranged from a few dollars to several hundred dollars each.
Mark Reddig, host of OOIDA’s “Land Line Now” daily radio show on XM Satellite Radio Channel 171 said he is moved by the response.
“We never cease to be amazed at the depth of kindness that exists within the trucking community, especially within the OOIDA membership,” Reddig said.
“Land Line Now” has been promoting the telethon during its daily broadcasts this week, and other XM Channel 171 hosts, including Bill Mack and Dale Sommers, have lent their support to the effort during their programs.
The money raised will be used to buy personal and comfort items for the military personnel serving in the conflict areas. OOIDA staff will be preparing and arranging delivery of the parcels directly to troops stationed in the Middle East.
The “Telethon for Troops” continues through Friday, Dec. 7. Those wishing to participate through either membership or individual donations may contact the OOIDA Membership Department at 1-800-444-5791.
