MoDOT converts aging rest areas into truck-only parking sites

The Missouri Department of Transportation began tearing down two aging rest areas near Mineola at mile marker 168 on Interstate 70 in late May.

However, instead of closing the sites completely, MoDOT opted to reopen the sites for trucks only.

DeAnne Rickabaugh of MoDOT Motor Carrier Services, told Land Line that the agency recognizes the importance of having safe spots for truckers to rest.

She said the sites were scheduled to be temporarily closed but then reopened for truck parking during a full conversion to truck-only parking.

“We are going to allow trucks to go ahead and park in the safe areas and that will be any night as long as it’s safe to do so and truckers respect the construction barriers,” Rickabaugh said in May. Vault toilet facilities were scheduled to be installed at the Mineola sites.

And there’s more good news. New welcome centers on I-55 opened at Marston, southbound at mile marker 42, and at Hayti, northbound at mile marker 20.

“The Marston welcome center adds 64 truck parking spaces, and the Hayti center adds 60 truck parking spaces in Southeast Missouri,” Rickabaugh said. “These are not just rest areas with a building. There is some fun stuff there, from playgrounds and pet areas to information on what makes the local area unique.”

She said MoDOT is committed to adding or preserving truck parking spots wherever it can. LL
