OOIDA Vice President Todd Spencer and Land Line Now Host Mark Reddig traveled to Cincinnati in August to make a special presentation to a man whose name is synonymous with trucking radio.
That man is Dale Sommers, known as the Truckin’ Bozo. Sommers is an American radio personality who is widely known for his long-running talk, call-in and music show geared toward over-the-road truckers. On Aug. 4, Spencer and Reddig presented him with an OOIDA Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was suggested and approved by the OOIDA Board of Directors at the spring 2010 meeting. Sommers is a life member of OOIDA.
The framed plaque commended Sommers for his 50-year-plus career during which he “stimulated, amused and motivated thousands of long-haul truckers, making him a valued friend of truckers’ and someone who made the miles less lonesome.”
Spencer says there has never been any question on what side Dale was on with any issue.
“In an unabashedly bold style, he has always communicated on behalf of truckers, and has done so for decades now,” says Spencer.
From 1984 to 2004, Sommers hosted the all-night show from Cincinnati-based Clear Channel Station WLW-700. In 2004, he agreed to do an afternoon talk show on XM Satellite Radio. The popular show now airs on Sirius XM, The Road Dog Channel – Sirius 147, XM 171 – from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern time. LL
