Hot & cool ... International Trucking Show
Outside, temperatures soared to triple digits; inside, it was really cool

by Suzanne Stempinski, Land Line exclusive

If strolling around hot trucks while keeping your cool sounds like a good idea, you should have been at the International Trucking Show June 26-28. Inside the Las Vegas Convention Center along with more than 500 vendors and an estimated 30,000 visitors over the course of the three-day show were roughly 50 shiny show trucks — making this the largest indoor event of its kind.

Presented by Stars & Stripes Show Truck Events, this year’s Show & Shine was sponsored by: Peterbilt Motors Co., Chevron DELO, Newport’s RoadStar Magazine, Long Haul Truck Appearance Products, PPG Industries, Belmor Heavy Truck Products, Truck-Lite, Howes Lubricator Products, Rockwood Industries, 75 Chrome Shop, Valley Chrome Plating, Bridgestone/Firestone Tire Co., Alcoa Wheel Products, BF Goodrich Tire Co. and Double Eagle Sleepers.

Super-size it
OOIDA members Donald and Susan Pardue traveled from Clarkesville, GA, with their 2002 Peterbilt 379 with a super-size sleeper and more than 100 lights covering their tractor. Leased to Landstar Ranger, the couple hauls munitions and other government freight. Because of the specialized nature of what they haul, they’re accustomed to running by the rules. According to Don, “We run compliant all the time. Our logbooks are checked against satellite tracking devices after every load, so we’re used to running legal.”

They came to Las Vegas hoping to place — and brought home two trophies for their trouble. “We really wanted to do well with our sleeper. Being inside under the lights, everything shows — you can’t hide any flaws. But it’s really nice to be out of the hot weather,” Pardue said.

Why not make it a family vacation?
Ron and Jan Huey of Greensburg, IN, have been OOIDA members for more than 15 years. Their 2002 International has been lovingly customized inside and out. “We’ve done most of the work ourselves,” explained Ron. “We built new cabinets for our interior, installed wood flooring, designed and made our own deck plates and other pieces to make it just the way we want it.”

Leased to the same carrier for the past 10 years, Ron and Jan run from Indianapolis to the Carolinas, then to Cincinnati and back to Indy again about 45 weeks of the year. They were joined in Las Vegas by several family members to make it a “working vacation.” According to Ron, “Jan and I worked for a couple of days cleaning the truck before we got parked indoors until about 3 p.m., then knocked off so we could spend some time with our family. We had a great time all the way around.”

Frankly, my dear
Collecting a total of five trophies was OOIDA member Rhett Butler of Rhett Butler Trucking. He knows all about the importance of good help. Their crew spent hours cleaning and detailing their crowd-pleasing truck, “Miss Scarlett.” The truck and trailer, covered with “Gone With the Wind” themed murals, include pictures with Rhett’s face on one side of the trailer, and wife, Lynn’s, face on the other. They always put their best face forward on judging day, dressing themselves and their helpers in antebellum costumes.
