Clyde J. Hart, Jr. has vacated his position as administrator of the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) to accept a temporary appointment as the acting Deputy Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The assignment was effective May 22.
Julie Cirillo, who has been handling the job of Acting Deputy Administrator since the FMCSA was established Jan. 1, 2000, will now serve as the Acting Chief Safety Officer. Cirillo's job is the highest ranking staff position within the new motor carrier safety administration and one, sources say, she has been expecting.
Hart was appointed Maritime Administrator by President Clinton and has held the post since August 1998. He previously served four years as the Senior Democratic Counsel of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.
While Hart is on assignment at FMCSA, Deputy Administrator John Graykowski will step in as acting administrator at MARAD.
