FHWA cancels Safety Summit II

On Nov. 23, the Federal Highway Administration pulled the plug on their National Truck & Bus Safety Summit II, originally scheduled for Dec. 6-8, 1998, in Atlanta. Vague wording in the press release announcing the cancellation and in a follow-up letter to summit participants from FHWA Executive Director Anthony Kane left many in the industry unsure of exactly what prompted the FHWA's action. Speculation centers around pressure from so-called safety groups, one of which publicly accused the Office of Motor Carriers of "stacking" the summit with "industry lobbyists and mouthpieces," with only "token consumer and victim representation."
