They say if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. So I approached the editors of BlueMurder.com with the idea for a CD of mystery road stories, and set them up with master narrator Dick Hill. The result? Six for the Road, an audio six pack of mystery stories for your driving entertainment. The mysteries include On the Road Again about a hitchhiker that wanted to get out of the city, but hes just thumbed a ride with the wrong trucker (actually the hitchhiker is the killer thats the twist). A String of Pearls is a story about a cop who has just been run down, and suspicion falls on his pretty, young wife. In Lucky, Calvin and PK had a good thing going that snowy November, but their luck runs out. Joy Ride asks if its not wise to drink and drive, what happens if youre using a cell phone too? One More for the Road is about some unexpected customers at Lenox Liquors that rekindle a clerks thoughts of suicide. Bonus full cast audio drama A Helping Hand is a story about a wimp that gets a Harley, a beer and a whole new perspective. Theres a full cast radio drama included on the CD, while road sound effects enhance the original production. The CD is $15 plus $2.50 shipping from Blue Murder Press 2340 NW Thurman Street Suite 202 Portland, OR 97210. Also available on cassette at $9.95 plus $2.50 shipping. Rather reads his new book, The American Dream,
which includes essays and true stories of people from all
walks of life hoping to achieve success in America. The
CBS news anchor defines what success means to people, and
reveals that the American dream is far from dead. Conclusion?
Although we have our problems, the phrase only in America
is still true today, and the United States remains the most
sought-after refuge for those seeking freedom worldwide.
This is an uplifting book that offers even cynics pause
to reflect about where we came from and where were
going. (6 hrs.; Harper Audio; ISBN 0-694-52552-9) |

When
the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed after delivering the
bomb in WWII, almost 900 men went into the shark-infested
sea and were adrift for days. When the Navy finally came
to the crews rescue, only 321 remained alive. This
true story, which inspired the movie Jaws, is
now on audio. Titled In Harms Way by Doug
Stanton, it is well read by actor Boyd Gaines. (6 hrs.;

If your favorite show is The Practice, you might enjoy The Great Divide by T. Davis Bunn, about a retired lawyer who is drawn back into the practice of law at the request of a couple whose daughter disappeared while investigating slave labor at a U.S. factory that manufactures sports shoes in China. Buck Schirner lends his deep voice to the tale, and while he is not a particularly gifted actor in multiple voice character interpretation, his reading projects well over truck stereo speakers, and he does hold the interest even for those of us who usually yawn at courtroom drama.
