The honeymoon is over for truckers who use engine brakes without adequate mufflers. Law enforcement personnel are no longer writing warning tickets for violations of the new law - now they're the real thing. Fines and court fees will cost violators about $560.

Ohio

Sen. Richard Schafrath (R-19), author of an unsuccessful bill to create uniform speed limits in Ohio, has resigned to take a position with a state agency. William Harris of Ashland, OH, has been appointed to complete the two years remaining in Schafrath's term. Now is the time for truckers to contact Harris (the Senate general information number is 614-466-4900) to acquaint him with their safety concerns and urge him to support uniform speed limits for cars and trucks.

New Jersey

There has been no action on AB2384 or companion S49 to expand the ban on trucks on non-national network routes to include 96-inch wide trucks. Both bills are in their respective transportation committees.

The Assembly Judiciary Committee has taken no action on AB1092. The bill calls for strict liability and criminal sanctions for owners of heavy-duty diesel trucks involved in (not necessarily at fault) fatal accidents.
